Caves and potholes in the Pirineu Axial major geological unit
The central, highest core of the Pyrenean range, made of ancient crystalline materials. Karst is concentrated in pockets of limestone and marble interleaved within it, often at high altitude.
Groups 10 geological units across Cerdanya, Ripollès, Pallars Sobirà, dominated by calcàries.
Catalonia has 415 catalogued cavities in the Pirineu Axial major geological unit, including 165 potholes and 250 caves. The longest is Cova de la Fou de Bor (4,246m) and the deepest is Sistema de la Bargadèra (571m).
