Forat de la Canya

Small cave with a 48-metre passage in Vall de Cardós.

Vall de Cardós • Pallars Sobirà 48m 18m

Small cave with a 48-metre passage in Vall de Cardós.

Characteristics

Location

The cavity is located above the Mata d'Esterri and below the Pic de la Portella, at the place of Cassibrós. To reach it, we take the track that climbs from Esterri de Cardós to the Pla de Negua. At the height of the Fonteana we must leave the vehicles to begin the ascent on foot, making an imaginary diagonal in a W direction, towards a small col where the cavity is found. The climb must be done through the middle of the forest, with no path. On this route we will cross three old “carrues” and pass beside a couple of ruined bordes. After an hour of walking we come to the forat de la Canya, located on the slope of Cassibrós. Approximate coordinates; the point indicated (1700m) by the coordinates provided by the author of the article (GEB), gives a difference of 138 metres in height with respect to that measured by them (1838m).

Description

Morphology

The entrance is a hole 2.20 metres high by 0.50 wide; this gives way to a ramp with a steep inclination (-35º), until finding a 1.60-metre drop combined with a narrow passage 0.40 metres wide. A few metres further on the cavity ends with a real passage of 48 metres and a drop of -18 metres. The dimensions of the cave, a single gallery, are regular (0.70 metres wide and 3 metres high). Halfway along there is a zone where the ceiling is higher; a 7-metre climb allows us to explore this variant (section 2 of the survey). It is a curious cavity excavated in a material that has every appearance of slate (llicorella in the country) and that follows a N-S oriented joint. At the end of the cave we find parietal lithogenic calcite coatings. This fact suggests that the rock must have a certain limestone component.

History

Known since ancient times by the people of the country, it is said that this hole was an old ossuary. The shepherds explain that at the first drop there was a trunk to be able to descend to the bottom, a place where there was a spring from which they took water. The first exploration of which we have reference was carried out by the GE Badalona on 25 October 1997. During the exploration they found no sign of the spring, only a dry pool that probably sometimes fills with water. This cavity was indicated to Francesc X. Sudrià by Mr. Lluís Sevilla, of Casa Blanca d'Arròs, when the former was collecting data for the book of the Vall de Cardós. He got in contact with members of the GEB and accompanied them to the cavity.
