Known since time immemorial, it is already mentioned by Mn. Jacint Verdaguer following his excursion to the area on 14 July 1882; Verdaguer mentions that the entrance to the vall de Cardós is narrow and is called “Forat de Cardós”, a name also given to a cave on the left of the path which is a Niu d'Encantades, according to the people of the village.

In Puig y Larraz, when he mentions it in “Cavernas y Simas de España”, possibly due to a translation error, he omits the real name by which the cave was known and from then on it has been known as Niu d'Encantades, since Font i Sagué reproduces in the Catalech Espeleologich de Catalunya the information given by Puig y Larraz.

On 19 March 1978, members of the ERE of the Agrupació Excursionista de Catalunya visited and surveyed it, publishing it in the Agrupació's bulletin under the erroneous name of cova de la Carme, very probably due to their ignorance of the existence of bibliography on this cavity.
