Characteristics

Location

The only reference we have regarding the location of the pit is that it is in the area of the Pico de Entrescaballos. We have not been able to locate this place name in our cartography, but it does appear in the French Pyrenean cartography covering a stretch of the Val d'Aran. It seems to be the peak that crowns the Serra de Sescorjada (elevation 2446 m) to the N of the Saut deth Pish.

In case anyone has a special interest in locating it, the explorers of the pit provided some Lambert coordinates, which are: X: 475.9 Y: 3055.8. Their conversion does not seem to be too easy a task, and even less so without knowing which of the four or five formats corresponds to these Lambert coordinates.

News in October 2018: Our colleague Josep Guarro (PROTEUS) informs us that he has found a system to convert these Lambert coordinates to UTM and that, applied to other cavities in the area, it has given him a sufficiently satisfactory result, with a difference of less than 50 metres. It should also be borne in mind that in 1974 there were no GPS devices and therefore the coordinates were taken directly from the map. So, we update the record with the coordinates calculated by Josep which, although approximate, may be more reliable than those we gave initially.

He also tells us that in the old Spanish IGN cartography he has been able to locate the place name of Pico de Entrescaballos.

Description

Morphology

From the little information we have about this cavity, it seems that one enters through a narrow vertical conduit that leads to a series of three consecutive shafts (P-16; P-10; P-30). At the base of the last shaft, two short and narrow conduits originate that lead, one in the opposite direction from the other, to respective chimneys where the cavity ends.

History

Discovered by Bernard Magos (Saint-Ambroix, Gard) and Etienne Carels (CARSS) during the second campaign of this group of French-Belgian speleologists in the area of the estany de Liat. It was explored that same summer of 1974 and from the scant memory few things can be ascertained about it.

From reading this memory we can deduce that they did not have much desire to return, due to the difficult access to the area and “the attacks of wild cows on the tents and the food. Not to mention the attacks of the shepherds, also wild, on the female participants of the expedition” (literal translation from the French).
