Description
Morphology
Between blocks one enters a main gallery. Shortly after advancing along it, there is a branch to the left that ends after about 20 m. In the final section, the passage turns left and a few metres further on, through an impenetrable hole, the watercourse seeps away. The entire gallery shows bare rock and the section is narrow and low. (Oral information from Oleguer Escolà).
Hydrology
The main gallery is traversed by a watercourse, with a flow rate that fluctuates greatly depending on the season. In the final section, through an impenetrable hole, the watercourse seeps away. The French located both the loss of the river and the spring that gives rise to a small tributary of the Marimanha.
Other details
Additional information: A few hours after posting this record, with very preliminary data (15-6-2020), our colleague Josep Guarro, always attentive to everything happening in the Vall d'Aran, points out that in the report of the French and Belgian cavers in the Vall d'Aran of 2018 and 2019, a survey appears of a cave in the Marimanha area (Cova de la Pedra Gravada), explored in 2016 and with many similarities to that of Oleguer Escolà (1982). There is no doubt that it is the same cave. From the survey it can be seen that the French explored passages unexplored in 1982 and located both the loss of the river and the spring that gives rise to a small tributary of the Marimanha. The length given is 178 m surveyed plus 50 m unsurveyed.
History
Visited by Oleguer Escolà and Carme Picañol (ERE – CEC) on 21-7-1982 during a prospection of the area. The first record of the cavity appears when Escolà provided J. de Valles with a copy of the sketch he made to include it in the Catàleg (2008). In July 2016 French cavers (among them the veteran Yves Besset, well acquainted with the Aranese cavities since the 1970s) explored a cave they named Cova de la Roca Gravada, referring to a petroglyph near the cave entrance. This cavity is undoubtedly the one explored in 1982 by the ERE – CEC and named Cova del Uelh de Marimanha.
