Tuta de Can Barraca

Tuta de Can Barraca

Cova de 88 metres de recorregut a Sant Joan de les Abadesses.

Sant Joan de les Abadesses • Ripollès88m7m

An 88-metre-long cave in Sant Joan de les Abadesses, with a narrow entrance opened by digging out and branching galleries.

Characteristics

Location

From the N-260 road from Ripoll to Sant Joan de les Abadesses, at kilometre 197.36 just before crossing the torrent de Ribamala, a track leaves on the left-hand side heading for Coll de Jou. After travelling approximately 1.5 kilometres, we turn off onto a track on the right that crosses the torrent de Ribamala and heads for Can Dosdies and Can Barraca; from this latter house, without losing or gaining height, one must continue in a SE direction to the nearby torrent, which comes down from the collada del Can Boixerol. A small path leads to a small wood where the Tuta de Can Barraca and the Tuta del Formatge are found, very close to one another. There is quite a lot of vegetation at the entrance, which makes access difficult, as well as some wires that we assume have been put there to prevent livestock from entering.

Description

Morphology

Around its narrow entrance, opened by digging out, the remains deposited by the collapses of vanished galleries that once gave continuity to this cavity can be seen. A descending gallery leads us to a widening from which two branches start, both ending blocked. Continuing along the main gallery, a large block fallen from the ceiling almost bars our way. Through a small opening we can continue, reaching a wider gallery. On arriving at this point, the section becomes rectangular. The cavity bifurcates, the right-hand gallery follows a higher level and in its final stretch forms two floors connected by windows. The left-hand gallery, which continues at a lower level, again divides into two more that end in narrow passages.

Speleothems

Small stalactitic formations can be seen on the ceiling.

History

Following information received from an acquaintance of the GE Badalona, they got in contact with the inhabitants of Can Barraca, who accompanied them to the cavity, carrying out the digging out of the entrance and exploration of the cavity on 31 March 1996.
