A group of three small cavities in Gombrèn (Ripollès), known since ancient times under various place names.

Location

We will set out from the village of Gombrèn along the GI-402 road, heading towards la Pobla de Lillet; after passing the 2.7 km marker, we will turn off onto the GI-6659 road, leave the turn-off leading to the sanctuary of Montgrony on the right and continue. We will pass beside the ruins of the Castell de Mataplana, and continue until we reach the col del pla de l'Espluga; here we will leave the car to follow an ascending path heading south, up to the coll de l'Espluga. Once there, we will continue to the left along the ridge until we find a limestone wall where we will see the rock shelter.

Description

Morphology

These are three cavities that do not connect with one another. The largest cavity, by speleological standards, has the form of a cave. It has dimensions of 6.5 m in width by about 10 m in depth and a maximum height of 4.5 m.

We also find an upper opening 50 cm in diameter with a passage of 1.5 that hangs completely.

The upper rock shelter lies above and has an elongated form; it is 9 m wide by 2.5 m deep and 2 m high.

History

Known since ancient times.

In the various publications in which the cavity is mentioned, this place name is referred to with different appellations (Bauma del Cot, Cova del Cot, Cova de l'Espluga, Bauma de l'Espluga de Plom).
