Characteristics

Location

On the GI-402 road from Gombrèn to La Pobla de Lillet, shortly before kilometre 3, we turn off towards the Mare de Deu de Montgrony. Before reaching it, we must turn off, to the left, onto the track that leads to the refugi de les Planelles. Without leaving this path, we gain altitude until, at a bend to the right, a track emerges, in very poor condition, closed with a chain. From this point we must continue on foot until we find a cairn, on the right, where a path begins. Without losing the cairns, we reach the cavity, situated at the foot of the cliff.

Description

Morphology

The 6-metre-wide entrance faces SE, and gives way to a main gallery about 15 metres long, with a section 7 metres wide, very steep, the ceiling dipping 40º W, and with the floor occupied by a large stalagmitic flow. At the end of this gallery and at the upper part of the flow, a small chamber opens from which small branches emerge that become impassable within a few metres. Also at the final part of the gallery and at the foot of this stalagmitic mass, there are two parallel small chambers of little development. Returning to the entrance of the cavity, at its side, a narrow fissure begins that ends above a small pit of -4 metres. The vertical extent is 12 metres (+6/-6).

Speleothems

The floor of the main gallery is occupied by a large stalagmitic flow.

History

Located by members of the GE Pedraforca on 18 July 1964 during a speleological prospecting campaign in which the following took part: Regina Fuentes, Tere Hernández, Gemma Navarro (the pubilles who gave the cave its name) and Felip Figaró. They return on 27 September of the same year to explore it, finding archaeological remains.

During 28 to 30 May 1965 they return again, finding more archaeological remains.

They would make two more visits to the cavity, before on 24 June 1967 they tried to clear a small pit without success, but they carried out the survey.

They return again on 1 to 3 May 1970, when they manage to clear the small pit and complete the survey.

From that moment the trail of the cave is lost and its location is very imprecise. Almost 50 years must pass before Joan Vigueras, from Campdevànol, while preparing the publication of an extensive work on Gombrèn, contacts Miquel Nebot, one of the authors of the first works at the cave, to try to recall details that would make its location possible. Vigueras himself speaks with the mountaineer Santi Sanz, a good connoisseur of the Montgrony reliefs who, after several days following cliffs, rediscovered the cave on 23 May 2018. Shortly afterwards, some of the first explorers had the opportunity to return to the cave they had “lost”.
