Coves de Ribes

Coves de Ribes

Conjunt de coves de 95 metres de recorregut a Campelles.

Campelles • Ripollès95m26m

A group of caves with 95 metres of passage at Campelles, with conduits hanging on the crag and one cave at ground level.

Characteristics

Location

On the N-152 road, heading towards Ribes de Freser, shortly before reaching kilometre 116, we find the bridge that crosses the Freser river; on the left side is the old bridge that is currently a flat area where one can stop, from here the coves de Ribes can be seen on the crag wall. From the flat area a track sets out that in about 30 metres brings us to the base of the access to the main cave, where we will find a rope installation with a handrail that will allow us to reach the old path that leads to the cave.

We suspect that the cave marked on the survey as (IV) is the same cave that members of the SIE made known as “coveta del Pont”.

Description

Morphology

It is a group of small conduits hanging on the crag, except for the one at ground level. These conduits have no communication between them; the sum of all of them is 95 metres of passage and 26.5 metres of height, but the reality is that the most important conduit only has 33 metres of passage and a drop of +7.5 metres. The development of the conduits ranges between 10-17 metres, except for the one of greatest height on the crag, which presents a passage of 33 metres parallel to the crag. This hole opens at +19 metres from the ground and is accessed by an artificial path built on the wall; after covering 33 metres it emerges again on the crag at +26.5 metres of height. To the left of the entrance of the previous conduit, we find hanging on the crag the access to another conduit of about 18 metres of passage.

The cave that is at ground level has a passage of 14 metres and ends in a flooded area. The other two mouths are in the parking area, one almost above the other at 4 and 6 metres from the ground, and have 17 and 13 metres of passage respectively.

History

Mentioned by G. Pujades in his "Crónica Universal del Principado de Cataluña" (1609) and later appears in some excursionist accounts of the 19th century. Madoz (1850), Puig i Larraz (1896) and Font i Sagué (1897) include them in their respective catalogues, but without giving exploration references. On 14 August 1910, Faura, Santamaria and Sala (Centre Excursionista de Catalunya), on their way to the coves de Rialb, visit the site and reveal the little interest of the same. The synonym of Balmes de Campdevànol (?) is by Faura.
