Castellar de n'Hug • Berguedà83m11m

An 83-metre-long cave in Castellar de n'Hug, known since time immemorial and explored and surveyed on 19 July 1959 by the GIE.

Characteristics

Location

From Castellar de n'Hug we leave by the eastern part of the village in the direction of La Ribera and from there to l'Erola. From this cluster of houses, in 400 metres we reach the collada de l'Erola, where on the right there is the water pool that supplies the village, and from where we make out the great mouth of the cave. 160 metres further on, on the right, we find the font dels Torrents. At this point we will find a path on the left in a westerly direction, which in 325 metres will bring us to the mouth of the cave.

Description

Morphology

A large mouth opens the cavity and gives way to a broad vestibule lit from outside, terraced and adapted as a shelter for livestock. Sections 5 to 6 metres wide are common here with some domes 6 to 9 metres high, which disappears some 24 metres from the entrance, after passing a small barrier of stones made by the shepherds themselves. From this point the descending ramp begins, while the width decreases to one metre, the height increases to 12 metres. The ramp ends in the largest chamber of the cavity, produced by the intersection of various joints, which produce small transverse galleries with notable clastic processes. Despite the various and varied surveys known of this cavity, there is no consensus when it comes to establishing the real dimensions of the cavity. Thus we find that the length ranges from the 60 metres attributed to it by the GELERA, to the 110 metres of the GIE, and as regards the elevation change the range of figures goes from -6 to -13 metres. The revision of the traverse carried out by the EspeleoÍndex team gives 83 metres of length and -11 metres of depth.

History

Known since time immemorial. The first mention we know of is due to the description made by Artur Osona of two excursions made to the sources of the Llobregat, the first on 24 to 27 March 1882, on this excursion he is accompanied by Ramon Arabía and Gabriel Miró (bulletin Associació d'Excursions Catalanes no. 46-47) and the other he carries out between 7 and 10 April 1882, on which he is accompanied by C.A. Torras and Carles Gràcia (L'Excursionista no. 42; Associació Catalanista d'Excursions Científiques) and where in both publications he gives exactly the same brief review of la Tuta, although it seems he does so more from references than as if he had visited it. He writes that the cave was a refuge of the Christians from the attack of the Saracens and that the word tuta comes from Latin (to guard, refuge,...).

This first mention is collected in the old catalogues (Puig y Larraz, Font i Sagué, Faura i Sans).

There is no further news until 19 July 1959 it is fully explored and surveyed by members of the GIE of the Club Excursionista de Gràcia. It seems that before, however, it had been visited (around 1950) by Francesc Español for biospeleological purposes.
