Description
Morphology
Spectacular rock shelter about 30 metres wide at its lower part. Its base is an ascending ramp leading to the base of a 17-metre-deep pit, whose mouth opens at the upper part of the rock shelter.
Progression
Along its walls there are various anchors installed by climbers, creating climbing routes.
History
Known since time immemorial by the people of the area and later by hikers and climbers. Despite this it had never been cited by speleologists. Although in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya. Vol 3 - Cerdanya (Jordi de Valles, 2009) it is cited with practically no data and from a list of cavities by Gener Aymamí (2004), the Balma de l'Avenc, which seems fairly obvious that it is the Avenc-Balma del Serrat de les Esposes and, the nearby Balma del Pla de les Esposes, of which it only says that it had been a sheepfold for livestock. We think that very possibly it is the one known as Balma de Segalars.
