Characteristics

Location

The worked rock shelter is located at the Grau de l'Ós, in Riu de Cerdanya. From the Túnel del Cadí area, take a track that leads behind the toll booth. Here you must leave the car and continue on foot along the torrent; through a lower tunnel you pass to the other side of the road. Within a few metres you enter the barranc del Grau de l'Ós, which must be ascended. In the most gorge-like area, also known as Estret de Canals, the Xemeneia lateral is found on the right wall. Continuing upstream along the ravine, some steps must be overcome until reaching a characteristic point, where a huge fallen block has become wedged between the walls of the gorge. It must be overcome on one side where a space has remained to ascend, with the help of an iron ladder installed for this purpose. Back on the torrent bed, you must keep climbing and after a few more metres ahead the Cova Gran is found, half hidden by the vegetation. Continuing up the torrent until finding a scree slope of excavated materials, and a little further on you reach the visible worked rock shelter.

A small rock shelter that has undergone a transformation into a small dwelling by means of masonry works. It is about 5 metres deep by just over 2 metres wide. On the frame of the old door there is an inscription and a date that takes us back at least to 3 April 1965.

According to what we are told on the website engarrista.com, it seems it was built to serve as a material store for some old manganese mines near the site.
