Characteristics

Location

From Riu de Cerdanya one must take the track that leads to Coll de Pendís. About 5 kilometres from the start is the refuge and recreational area of the Serrat de les Esposes. Shortly before reaching this point, on the left of the track and at the head of the torrent del Grau de l'Os, the large rock shelter can already be seen. From here one must continue descending along the left slope of the torrent until reaching the rock shelter.

Description

Morphology

Large rock shelter that presents a mouth about 40 metres wide and a height of 9 metres at its upper end. Divided into two sectors: in the upper part a dry-stone wall is preserved that had the function of making it work as a fold. In the lower sector, at the back of the rock shelter, there are a series of conduits joined to one another that give rise to a stretch of short galleries in the darkness. The total drop is 16 metres (+9; -7).

History

Known since time immemorial by the people of the region. Despite this it had never been cited by speleologists. Although in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya. Vol 3 - Cerdanya (Jordi de Valles, 2009) it is cited with practically no data and from a list of cavities by Gener Aymamí (2004), the Balma de l'Avenc, which it seems quite obvious is the Avenc-Balma del Serrat de les Esposes (pit-shelter of the Serrat de les Esposes) and, the nearby Balma del Pla de les Esposes, of which it only says that it had been a fold for livestock. We think that very possibly it is the one known as Balma de Segalars.
