Characteristics

Location

Along the N-260 road, heading from Bellver de Cerdanya to Puigcerdà, shortly before kilometre 191 there is the turn-off for the GIV-4032 road that leads to the small village of Olopte. From the entrance to the village, follow carrer Església until reaching carrer A; on the left a street descends and soon becomes a track until reaching a bridge that crosses the Duran river; we will follow the path downstream for about 125 metres. The cavity is located about 65 metres above the path that runs parallel to the Duran river on the hydrographic right slope, on a rocky spur right beside cova B, a few metres further N and 4 metres above cova B d'Olopte. The cavity is the one with the largest entrance of all the caves of Olopte; currently (2021) the entrance has been closed with a grille gate in order to protect the archaeological heritage.

Description

Morphology

Formed by a single gallery 12 metres long with an average cross-section of 2 to 2.5 metres that ends filled up by sediments.

Hydrology

It is very likely that this gallery formed part of the drainage system of cova B.

History

Although the caves of Olopte have been known since time immemorial and mentioned in passing in some hiking and archaeological works, it is not until the campaigns that members of the ERE – CEC carried out systematically from 1966 to 1970 in different areas of Cerdanya that they were widely publicised.

The caves of Olopte have been the subject of various archaeological campaigns in which diverse materials have been collected from the Neolithic, Bronze Age and up to medieval times.
