Characteristics

Location

E of Roses. To get there, take the path that leaves the dolmen de la Creu d'en Cobertella towards the Muntanyeta, an urbanisation near Roses. Shortly before this urbanisation there is a sign on the left of the path; the Cau is 150 metres away along a descending footpath. Below the pla de la casa Cremada.

Description

Morphology

An accumulation of large blocks, noticeably rounded by erosion, forming a series of conduits of clastic origin in a volume of 200 or 300 cubic metres. These dark zones, with only a few metres of labyrinthine passage, dusty ground and precarious stability, given their morphology, cannot be called true galleries.

Progression

No survey is available, so the exact route the whole complex may follow is unknown.

History

The first reference to this cavity is from Dr. Ricardo Zariquiey, who we think visited it in the same period (1919) as the Cova Tassana (Cadaqués). As in that one, he also captured several specimens of a troglobitic beetle then called Anillochlamys raholai. We have no further news until around the year 2000, when our friend Floren Fadrique visited it during his biospeleological research around the Cap de Creus.

Several archaeological excavations have been carried out, the first in 1946, another in 1967 and finally in 2006-2007. All the material collected belongs to different periods, from the Magdalenian to the Late Bronze Age.
