Characteristics

Location

From Roses we will head towards Cala Montjoi and continue in the direction of Platja de Jóncols; on reaching Coll de Canadell we will leave the vehicle and continue on foot along the northern path that leads to Cap Norfeu and skirts the bay of Jóncols. After 650 metres we will find the Cova de les Ermites on the right of the path; we will follow the path for 240 metres and on the right we will find a narrow trail that climbs up to the Cau del Lliri.

The cavity is included within an area protected as a Reserva Natural Integral (RNI), in this case that of Cap Norfeu, the highest protection category in Catalonia. In these RNIs it is only permitted to walk along expressly signposted itineraries in order to guarantee the conservation of the endangered species that live there, as well as their geological heritage.

Access to and return from the cavity may only be made along expressly signposted itineraries. In the case of this cavity, the itinerary that passes by the Torre de Norfeu must be used, and not the one that passes by the cova de les Ermites. The cavities may only be accessed with express authorisation from the managing body of the Parc Natural, which must be obtained beforehand.

Description

Morphology

The cavity can be considered divided into five levels connected by a system of shafts and ramps.

On the upper level is the entrance with a descending gallery that leads to the “Ortensi” chamber. In its ceiling, at a height of eight and a half metres, a narrow passage and a short ramp lead to a 7.5 metre shaft, and at its bottom a short gallery and a 10.4 metre shaft connect with the “Sala Gran”. In the lowest area of this chamber there are some galleries that, via a 3 metre shaft, lead to the third and fourth levels by means of two different galleries.

Other routes also leave from the “Sala Gran”. On the north-east side one can reach the “Sala de la Colada” and through a narrow passage one also reaches the “Sala Norfeu”, on the third level. Heading north-west, a gallery of triangular section leads to the “Sala de la Catedral”, 30 metres high and with an almost circular floor plan of about 3 metres in diameter.

Progression

By means of a fairly committing 25 metre climb, one can reach the highest point of the cavity relative to the entrance, +20 metres. The total vertical drop is 73.5 metres (-53.5/+20).

History

The first exploration was by the CEE (Centre Excursionista Empordanès) of Figueres in 1977. Later work by the Grup Empordanès d'Investigacions Subterrànies has made it possible to extend both the passage and the vertical drop considerably.
