A fissure of just over 11 m of vertical drop in the Coma Oriola (la Masella, Cerdanya), a residual cavity bearing witness to a glacial past.

Characteristics

Location

From la Masella (Alp) one must take the road that climbs to the refugi de la Pleta de Das and continue on to the point where it crosses the bed of the Coma Oriola (ski lift at the Costa Pelada). From here one must go up the valley for some 800 metres and a vertical drop of just over 100, until finding on the right (left hydrographic slope) a craggy relief bounded by scree slopes on its eastern side, which must be surmounted, and where all the cavities are located.

The Esquerda de la Bauma Petita is found at the foot of a cliff in the central zone of the aforementioned reliefs and just a few metres from the Bauma Petita.

Description

Morphology

Vertical fissure in the cliff wall, which can be entered after climbing over some large blocks that block the lower part of the entrance. The entire vertical passage has a vertical drop of 11.5 metres.

Progression

To enter it one must climb over some large blocks that block the lower part of the entrance.

Other details

All the caves and fissures located in the area are residual cavities, probably witnesses to other climatic circumstances. It is undeniable that the valley bears the imprint of a glacial past, and even today the action of ice widening the fracture structure is responsible for small cavities and for the great extent of these fragmentation scree slopes.

The original physiognomy of the Coma Oriola (according to the ICGC: Comaoriola), has been profoundly altered by the imprint of the ski resort, since a piste runs through this valley.

In summer and therefore outside the season, excavators, concrete mixers, etc. have extraordinarily transformed the bed of the basin, widening it and modifying its margins, causing vegetation and original soils to disappear, burying channels...

History

Although some of the cavities had certainly been observed by skiers and mountaineers who pass through the area, they had never been the object of speleologists until on 16 July 2015, members of the grup de l'espeleodijous proceeded to explore, study and catalogue a good number of the cavities in the area.
