A 23-metre-deep pit in Maçanet de Cabrenys, long known as cova Balló, with an approximate length of 45 metres.

Characteristics

Location

On the GI-503 road, from Maçanet de Cabrenys to Tapis, past kilometre 15, we find the el Gaspar farmhouse on the left of the road; 190 metres further on and to the right of the road a track starts, which we follow until we find the first turning to the right, which leads to the mas Balló. The cavity is on the S slope and on the last foothills of the Roc de Frausa, in the Clot del Balló, a short distance from the farmhouse of the same name and in a natural cut in the terrain. Approximate coordinates with little reliability.

Description

Morphology

The entrance opens 2 metres above ground level; after 6 metres and through a narrow passage, one reaches a chamber 6X8 metres, where the pit is found, subvertical, which reaches the bottom of the cavity. Shortly before the end there is a branch that leads to a small chamber 5X4 metres. The cavity has a depth of 23 metres (-20/+3), and an approximate length of 45 metres.

History

A cavity long known in Maçanet de Cabrenys under the name cova Balló, due to its proximity to the mas Balló. It seems that around the decade of the 1920's it was explored by a very popular character called Pata and from this comes one of the synonyms by which the cavity is known. The first speleological exploration was carried out in 1947 by four members of the Agrupació Excursionista Pedraforca (Barcelona). In January 1957 it was explored again by local cavers, according to a brief note that appeared in the magazine Cordada. The CE Empordanès (Figueres) explored and surveyed it on 7 and 14 November 1971. As the CEE reported at the time, a group from Mataró had painted the name “Avenc de la 7” at the entrance. Toponymy: The name Batlló with which it has been subsequently catalogued is not correct, since the name of the clot, as well as that of the farmhouse, is Balló. In the only known work on the cavity presented by S. Delclós Suñer at the 2º Simposium de Metodologia Espeleológica (1972) he cites it correctly.
