Vielha e Mijaran • Val d'Aran 933m 110m

Subterranean traverse with 102 metres of elevation change in the Val d'Aran, accessed via the Cauva de Sarrahèra and the Horat de Sarrahèra.

Characteristics

Location

The two cavities are located on the left bank of the arriu de Sarrahèra, above the 2000 metre contour.

Approaching from Pont de Suert, take the N-230 road; just after the N mouth of the Vielha tunnel, take the track that leaves immediately on the left. You will need to continue a few metres along the road to make the U-turn.

This track takes the N slope of the serra, and you must follow it until you meet the track that comes from Betren and climbs to the Tuca. The other alternative is to take this track from Betren; in that case follow the N-230 road, cross Vielha and in the middle of Betren, take the track on the right that climbs to the Tuca. With a high-clearance vehicle, both options will take about 40 minutes.

We will park the vehicles at the end of the track suitable for high-clearance vehicles, where there is a small altar, a cabin in good condition where one can spend the night and some livestock enclosures (ETRS89 coordinates 320957-4726544-1940msm). We will see the old installations of the Tuca ski station. On the other side of the stream, we will take any of the livestock paths that climb the slope and the old installations up to the coll Era Serra de Naut (2024m).

We will descend slightly in a SW direction and, without losing altitude, go around the mountain along a very well-marked path. We will pass above the bosc de Sarrahèra and, after a marble scree, reach the meadows that open out into the valley of Sarrahèra. From here we can see the entrance of the Cauva de Sarrahèra, directly opposite at the same elevation. The large esplanade that crosses the river, about 150 metres below us, will serve as a reference.

We will continue without losing much altitude to a large pool on the pala de Sarrahèra. Opposite, we will see the two channels that descend from Labada de Sarrahèra. The Horat de Sarrahèra is located next to the first channel coming from the esplanade. To reach it, one can climb up this channel, or one can access it via the channel to its left, which involves much easier scrambling. Via this second channel, one must watch for a grass slope located on the right and about 210 metres in height, which must be ascended. Once past it without losing altitude, we will continue in a W direction to the next channel. Before descending and crossing, we will be able to see the entrance of the SA-3 at the boundary between the marbles (grey) and the sandy limestones (brown).

Description

Morphology

After a small handline at the entrance, a direct 14-metre pitch, slightly narrow at the top, gives access to a 2X1.5 metre ledge. Immediately after, a 20-metre pitch accessed via a small parallel bell that forces one to exit vertically. At the base one passes between the blocks and downclimbs to the head of the 9-metre pitch of the -74m route. Opposite is the galeria de l'Aspirador, evident from the air current; follow it and, after a narrow passage between the rock wall and the sand, climb back up through the upper fossil tube to exit at the P3 ramp-pitch. In this area we find an ascending ramp with mud, and ahead we find the head of the P11, which gives access to the sala de la unió Jordi Icart.

In the lower part of the chamber, on the left, we find the continuation. It is a constant ramp with a lot of mud and some more vertical passages, but without any complication. At the end of the ramp one reaches a window in the upper part of a meander that is low in 'ramonage'. A few metres further on, in the meandre dels Cristalls, we will find a narrow passage before the meander narrows further. We will crawl for a few metres to the P8 pitch, accessing its upper part. One must climb a few metres to exit into the chamber. In this area the air current is quite strong; follow the most obvious route to the P6 pitch, which we will descend.

After a ramp of large blocks, we will find a junction, just where there is a step on the left. If we continue straight through the narrow meander, we will exit through an opening that gives onto the middle of the wall. If instead we go left following the wind passage, we will exit through the Cauva de Sarrahèra; it is a more comfortable route, although one must go half crouched and crawling.

Progression

To carry out the traverse of the sistema de Sarrahèra, the pitch (P8) located in the middle of the cavity at the -75m level must be rigged, since climbing it without a rope is very exposed. At the same time, the access to the entrance of the Cauva de Sarrahèra has a steep slope and therefore it is highly recommended to install a rope of about 100 metres, especially to descend safely.

History

In 2006 Jordi Icart of the GIEG located the Cauva de Sarrahèra (SA-1), while the following summer (2007) Joaquim Castaño of the EDES located the SA-3.

During 2016 and 2017, explorations in the area continued by members of the SEPS of the FE Barcelona and the IEE Sabadell with the collaboration of members of the GIE Granollers and the EDES of the CEC Bages; finally, after long days of digging, on 17 August 2017 they managed to complete the traverse of this system.
