Caves and potholes in the Les Garrigues geological unit

The Garrigues is a unit of the Depressió Central with 83 recorded cavities: 82 caves and 1 pit. The total passage is 715 m and the maximum depth is 6 m. The lithologies present are conglomerate, with 78 cavities, and sandstone, with 5.

The longest cavity is the Cova Foradada, with 41 m of passage, two entrances and 6.5 m of vertical extent, known and used since ancient times. It is followed by the Cova d'en Pont, with 21 m, and the Cova de l'Hostal, with 18 m. Other notable cavities are the Esquerda del Riu Set, of 15 m, and the Cova del Cintet, of 14 m, with an archaeological site from the Middle Bronze Age.

The deepest cavities are the Cova Foradada, with 6 m; the Cova d'en Pont and the Esquerda del Riu Set, with 5 m; the Cova del Basté, with 3 m, and the Balma Nº2 de Ca l'antonieta, with 2 m. The terrain is conglomerate and sandstone of the Ebro depression, where karst is limited but there are scattered cavities throughout the comarca.
