Characteristics

Location

On the C-233 road from La Granadella to El Soleràs, once past the ermita de Sant Antoni, at kilometre 24.1 and alongside the bassa de Sant Antoni, we follow the track on the right, which is the camí de les Figueres; at 250 metres we find a turn-off where we continue to the right; after covering 1780 metres and level with the bassa de l'Aran we continue along the track on the right, and after covering 1.5 km more we reach the mas del Vilà; here we head left along the camí de la vall de Comacerdà until we reach a three-way fork, we continue along the middle track that leads towards the mas Romeu, which we leave on the left, and some 200 metres further on we locate the cave on the right of the path, about fifty metres away.

Description

Morphology

Rock shelter 12 metres deep and 31 wide, with a single chamber. The front wall is notably thick and does not reach the roof.

Hydrology

It has a particular water storage system thanks to an underground water spring. At the back of the rock shelter there is a large cistern enclosed by walls that reach the roof; there is also a basin attached to the wall of the cistern. A conduit leads the water that cannot be stored towards some estates in front of the rock shelter, which thus have a constant irrigation system.

Progression

To access the interior it is necessary to climb some steps and enter through an opening in the wall, without a door.

History

Known and used since ancient times.
