Description

Morphology

It is a small cavity 20 metres wide and 10 metres deep. A dry-stone wall closes the cave.

Other details

In this rock shelter a series of engravings from the medieval period (400-1492) has been located.

As the wall has many areas of flaking and there are also small slabs that may fall at any moment, it is possible that some engravings have been lost. The engravings occupy a panel facing West, 3 metres wide by 1 metre high, and the figures measure from 2 to 6 cm, so one must look carefully; thus we can see static figures, shields, many lines and a figure that can be identified as a ship or large rowing boat. It is thought that a metal tool was possibly used for their execution.

The cova del Julio is inscribed in the register of Bens Culturals d'Interès Nacional (BCIN) of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
