Coves del Carnisser

COVA DEL CARNISSER: The shelter is 47 metres wide and only 5 metres deep. In the central part there is a modern construction that occupies a large part of the shelter. Between the construction of the track and the house, the morphology of the shelter has changed considerably. A small stretch of dry stone indicates that the shelter may previously have been walled.

COVA NO. 1 DEL CARNISSER: The shelter is 61 metres wide and 7 metres deep. The E half is between 1 and 2 metres deep and the ceiling is very low, which together with the presence of vegetation makes it hardly passable. The W sector has a height of 5 metres and the floor is quite steep.

COVA NO. 2 DEL CARNISSER: Shelter 41 metres wide and 7 metres deep. The height is quite great, up to 7 metres, except at the ends. The floor is dusty and sloping.

COVA NO. 3 DEL CARNISSER: Shelter very similar to no. 2. It is 66 metres wide by 11 metres deep, with heights ranging between 6 and 9 metres. At the E end there is a basin to collect the water that trickles from the wall. Totally dry on the day of our visit.

COVA NO. 4 DEL CARNISSER: Small shelter 9 metres wide, a maximum of 4 metres deep and 4.7 metres high. The floor is quite steep.

COVA NO. 5 DEL CARNISSER: At 103 metres it is the widest shelter in the municipality. The floor of the first 25 metres of the W part is very steep and is occupied by large blocks and sediments, with a height of 4 to 9 metres. The remaining part gains considerable height, also with some blocks and sediments.

COVA NO. 6 DEL CARNISSER: Shelter with a 20-metre overhang and a depth of 7 metres, with a maximum height of 4 metres. Apparently it has no modification nor has it had any human use. In the central part there are large blocks with a small drop. The rest is flat, with sediments and small blocks.

COVA NO. 7 DEL CARNISSER: It is 37 metres long and 7 metres deep, with a maximum height of 4 metres. In the central part sediments and large blocks detached from the ceiling, which is only a few metres thick, can be seen. The hand of man is noticeable by a series of stones aligned in the form of a separation.

COVA NO. 8 DEL CARNISSER: One of the widest shelters in the municipality, at 78 metres and a depth of 8 metres. In the widest part there is a dry stone wall 8 metres long and about one metre high, with some blocks placed in order to try to close the space and make it more protected. The floor is flat except for some large-sized blocks with many fine sediments distributed throughout the shelter. In a W direction, the shelter becomes narrower and at the final part there is a small room with stones placed in order to protect the space.

COVA NO. 8 DEL CARNISSER: We can observe some drips falling into a stone basin full of fresh water; this overflows forming a pool that animals frequent to drink. There is also a not very old beehive, currently disused.

COVA NO. 3 DEL CARNISSER: At the E end there is a basin to collect the water that trickles from the wall. Totally dry on the day of our visit.

COVA NO. 8 DEL CARNISSER: We can observe some drips falling into a stone basin full of fresh water; this overflows forming a pool that animals frequent to drink.

COVA DEL CARNISSER: From the C-242 road from la Granadella to Bellaguarda, at kilometre 11.720 a track leaves to the right which must be followed. After 350 metres we will find on the right a track closed by a chain. Here we will leave the vehicle and after 350 metres we will reach the shelter, located on the left of the track.

COVA NO. 1 DEL CARNISSER: From la Cova del Carnisser we will follow the track, which is soon cut by a block; after 150 metres we will already see la Cova no. 1, located on the left of the track.

COVA NO. 2 DEL CARNISSER: From la Cova del Carnisser we will follow the track, which is soon cut by a block; after 150 metres we will already see la Cova no. 2 del Carnisser, located on the right of the track, at a lower level than the track. Access is difficult due to the vegetation; it is located just above la Cova no. 3 del Carnisser.

COVA NO. 3 DEL CARNISSER: From la Cova del Carnisser we will follow the track, which is soon cut by a block; after 250 metres we will already see la Cova no. 3 del Carnisser, located on the right of the track and below la Cova no. 2 del Carnisser.

COVA NO. 4 DEL CARNISSER: From la Cova del Carnisser we will follow the track, which is soon cut by a block; after 250 metres we will leave the track to the right, and descend without a path about 20 metres of drop. It is difficult to locate.

COVA NO. 5 DEL CARNISSER: About 50 metres before reaching la Cova del Carnisser, we will need to look for a spot to descend to the lower part of the crag. There is no path and we will have to descend over very steep and unsafe terrain. The shelter is located 14 metres below the track.

COVA NO. 6 DEL CARNISSER: It is located 50 metres E of la Cova no. 5 del Carnisser, and 9 metres E of la Cova no. 7 del Carnisser, at the base of the same crag.

COVA NO. 7 DEL CARNISSER: It is located 40 metres E of la Cova no. 5 del Carnisser, and 9 metres W of la Cova no. 6 del Carnisser, at the base of the same crag.

COVA NO. 8 DEL CARNISSER: 75 metres before reaching la Cova del Carnisser, from the right side of the track a path leaves in a N direction, which after 40 metres crosses the tip of a terrace, after 160 metres we find a junction which we will follow to the left turning almost 180 degrees, after 420 metres the path ends in a cultivated field. We will follow along the S side of the field for about a hundred metres; the shelter is located just below at about 9 metres of drop; it will be necessary to look for the most suitable point to descend to it.
