A worked rock shelter at the Granadella, structured beneath a 4-metre-thick overhang, with a protective wall at the top.

Characteristics

Location

Leaving the Granadella along the C-242 road towards Bellaguarda, from kilometre 15.275 and on the left-hand side a track emerges that soon passes beside some farm buildings; after travelling 1.380 km we will find a junction where we continue to the left, 460 metres further on we will find another junction where we leave the vehicle (ETRS89, 307869 – 4580293).

The cave is on our left beneath a cliff, a little more than a hundred metres away and 23 metres below. There is no path.

Description

Morphology

Structured beneath a 4-metre-thick overhang with a protective wall at the top.

The cavity is 23 metres wide, 10 metres deep and has a maximum height of 2 metres.

The central part is protected by a dry-stone wall 2 metres high, which protrudes 2 metres beyond the vertical of the overhang. The floor is formed of sediments, it is low-roofed and as we enter we find two small steps until it becomes impenetrable. On the left of the cave there are two large blocks, one of which acts as a wall.

History

Known and used since ancient times.
