Caves of the Baix Empordà

The Baix Empordà contains 143 recorded cavities: 111 caves and 32 pits, with a total surveyed passage of 5,569 m and a maximum depth of 70 m. The lithologies present are limestone (71), granite (68), sandstone (3) and conglomerate (1). The comarca has 9 child units.

Among the longest cavities are the Sistema Coves de les Vetes - Frare, with 545 m, a group of submarine caves at l'Estartit with more than 500 m of passage; the Rec Ses Gralles, of 446 m and 48 m of depth at Begur; the Cova del Francès, with 400 m explored and unexplored galleries at -16 m below sea level; the Pou de la Calella, of 230 m of passage and 55 m of depth at l'Estartit (Torroella de Montgrí), with a route discovered in 1977; and the Cova d'en Gispert, with 174 m, known since time immemorial and explored speleologically in 1952.

The deepest cavities are the Pou d'en Narcís, of 70 m, discovered by Narcís Arbusé and explored and surveyed by the SIE – CEA at the end of 2006; the Pou de la Calella, of 55 m; the Rec Ses Gralles, of 48 m; the Pou d'en Miquel, of 32 m, with an artificial shaft of -12 m, a sump of -18 m and a total drop of 32.3 m (-30/+2.3); and Sa Roncadora, of 27 m, with a fissure of 46 m that connects the upper part of the cliff with sea level.
