Cau dels Ossos

Cavitat de 61 metres de recorregut al Montgrí.

Torroella de Montgrí • Baix Empordà61m4m

A 61-metre-long cavity in the Montgrí, discovered on 7 October 1883 by Anselmo Roig i Passarius and his son Pere, who gave it the name cova dels cinc (Cinch in the original).

Characteristics

Location

It can be accessed both from l'Estartit and from l'Escala, bearing in mind that during the summer months vehicle access is prohibited. Nevertheless, the most suitable access is probably via Sobrestany and la Torre Ferrana; from there we follow the la Muntanya Gran road (despite the name it is a track but in good condition), we will soon find a fork where we follow the left, after the Roc Ferran viewpoint a long straight begins, after covering 2.65 kilometres from la Torre Ferrana, we will find on the right of the track a wide parking area (ETRS89 coordinates 513072 – 4658371).

From here the cavity is 198 metres away in direction S12W. To reach it, follow the path on the S side of the parking area for 165 metres; at this point there is a cairn on the right of the path, we will go in on this side for 65 metres where we will find the two collapses that give access to the cavity.

Description

Morphology

The access to the cavity is on a descending plane of 30º and direction SW, being intercepted first by a gallery that leads to another opening located to the SE of the previous one, and secondly by the main gallery, which is formed by five alignments (80º, 120º, 125º, 150º, 145º). It reaches vault heights of 2.3 and 4 metres at the SE end, going towards the opposite end (NE 80º) where the vault gradually descends until it becomes impracticable.

History

Discovered on 7 October 1883 by Anselmo Roig i Passarius and his son Pere, who saw five rabbits come out of the cave and gave it the name cova dels cinc (Cinch in the original).

Later archaeological excavations were carried out there, since human burials were found, hence its name cau dels Ossos.

In 1978 SIRE-Sants carried out the only known survey, naming it avenc del Pla del Vent nº 7.

It is currently quite frequented by followers of “Geocaching”.
