Cau dels Ossos Nord

Cau dels Ossos Nord

Avenc de 9 metres de fondària al Montgrí

Torroella de Montgrí • Baix Empordà29m9m

A 9-metre-deep pit in the Montgrí, known to hunters since remote times and explored by the SIRE-UEC de Sants in 1978 as pit no. 3 of the Pla del Vent.

Characteristics

Location

It can be accessed from both l'Estartit and l'Escala, bearing in mind that during the summer months vehicle access is prohibited. Probably the most suitable access is via Sobrestany and the Torre Ferrana; from there we follow the Muntanya Gran road (despite the name it is a track but in good condition), we will soon find a fork where we follow the left; past the Roc Ferran viewpoint a long straight begins; after covering 2.65 kilometres from the Torre Ferrana, we will find on the right of the track a wide parking area (ETRS89 coordinates 513072 – 4658371).

From here and on the other side of the track a faint path starts in direction N30W which at 65 metres and on the right of the path leads us to the Cau dels Ossos Sud; the Cau dels Ossos Nord is 16 metres to the NE of this.

Description

Morphology

It opens in a doline of 10x8 metres and 4.5 metres deep. Following the main slope and through a chaos of blocks, one reaches a small pit of 2.5 metres where the maximum depth is reached.

Again at the base of the entrance pit, through a narrow passage is the access to a pit of about 4 metres, at the bottom of which is a joint that, climbing it, places us at -1 metre from the surface.

The upper conduit on the SE side of the cavity is next to the Cau dels Ossos Sud, but they do not connect.

History

Known by the local people, especially hunters since remote times. The SIRE-UEC de Sants explored it in 1978, naming it pit no. 3 of the Pla del Vent; near it there are some small cavities cited as Avencs del Pla del Vent numbers 1, 2, 5, and 6, none of them exceeds one metre in depth, for this reason their cataloguing has been discarded.
