Within the Torre Ponsa estate. About 250 metres S of the house there is a clearing beside a track, where the pit is found. Approximate coordinates.

Description

Morphology

Small pit 16 m deep relative to the entrance.

Progression

Through a gently sloping gallery one enters a series of small drops (from 2 to 3 metres) that lead to the bottom of the cavity at 16 metres depth relative to the entrance.

Other details

It seems that for some time it has been used as a dumping ground for dead animals.

History

Mentioned by references in old catalogues (Puig y Larraz, 1896; Font i Sagué, 1897; ...), noting that the local people spoke of a great cavern that communicated with the sea.

We have no further news until members of the ERE – CEC explore and survey it in March 1969, the survey remaining unpublished until now. They call it Forat del Bou.

During the SIE campaigns (2006-08) in the Montgrí they relocate it, but the attempt at exploration is frustrated a few metres from the entrance due to the large quantity of decomposing animal carcasses thrown inside.
