Two parallel caves at the port of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, beneath the maritime rescue museum at the Fortim, on the Punta dels Guíxols.

Characteristics

Location

The cavities are located beneath the maritime rescue museum, situated at the Fortim, on the Punta dels Guíxols. To reach them, one must head to the marina, at the Racó de Llevant, passing in front of the restaurant Sa Marinada, and turn left around the point of the Fortim. Here there is a grille gate that blocks the way; permission must be requested to pass. From this point a walkway continues above the sea and skirting the cliff, where the boats and yachts are moored. Almost at the end of the walkway, we find ourselves before the access to the two caves, but with the sea water in between.

Description

Morphology

These are two parallel caves: no. 1 has about 26 metres of passage and no. 2 has 19 metres of passage. Access to both caves is via a kind of vertical trench at sea level; inside are the two parallel caves. The one closer to the sea side is number 2, narrower than no. 1. The more inland cave, on the coast side, is no. 1; in the past it consisted of a 40-metre gallery that crossed this point of the port known as the Fortí or Fortim, but the construction of the marina and a restaurant on the West side of the Fortim sealed the entrance of the cave on that side. At present the cave is largely occupied by water; at the end there is a beach where the gallery widens, and a few metres further on the gallery narrows and becomes obstructed. The passage of both galleries is about 45 metres.

Hydrology

The sea water occupies the entire passage of cave no. 2, except for the last metres at the end of the cave. Cave no. 1 is largely occupied by water.

History

Known since time immemorial as the Cova del Sant because of a legend about Sant Feliu l'Africà, this legend takes place around the cave. At the beginning of the 1960s, it was explored and surveyed by members of the ERE of the CEC. The authors of the only existing survey, taken from the ERE - CEC archive, never said where the cavity was located. When it was first catalogued (CEDC-1982) it was placed, erroneously, at the Punta del Molar, a sector where the other cavities explored at that time were found. Years later, the remodelling of this area as the marina of Sant Feliu de Guíxols was responsible for the obstruction of the West part of the cave when the yacht club was built. At present it is difficult to access the mouth on the East side, since access to this part of the port is private and closed to the public. In the place where the West entrance of the cave was, at present (2017), there is the building of the restaurant Sa Marinada.
