Cova del Còrrec Fondo

Cova del Còrrec Fondo

Cova marina de 49,8 metres de recorregut a Torroella de Montgrí.

Torroella de Montgrí • Baix Empordà50m4m

Sea cave with a 49.8-metre passage in Torroella de Montgrí, with two entrances and a chamber flooded with crystal-clear water.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in Torroella de Montgrí. The best option for getting there is by sea, but you can also take the section of the GR-92 that starts from one end of cala Montgó (signposted) and head towards Punta Ventosa, skirting the cliffs between stretches of forest. Following the path, you first pass a very pronounced dry torrent that forms a small stony cove; the path climbs the slope opposite (GR-92) and after another stretch of forest you reach another quite distinct dry torrent, the còrrec Fondo. Once at the small cove that opens at the end of the torrent, the cave can be accessed by two routes. The first is through the cove, going into the water and following the coast (left wall, as if returning to cala Montgó); after about 100 metres you find the entrance of considerable size set against the cliff wall. If you continued by sea and passed the bend of the point of the wall, you would come to the other entrance that gives access to the cavity with a brief breath-hold passage. The other route is over the rocks on the left of the cove, which, following the cliff along its base and jumping from boulder to boulder, also leads to the main entrance.

Description

Morphology

From the main entrance and descending a drop of no more than 2 metres, you reach a chamber of good size. On its left wall, as you enter, there are two small openings separated from one another (the separation is the wall that reaches water level and would force you to dive). Entering through the one farthest from the entrance, there is a space of about 70 centimetres. Above the water level and with a similar width, you enter walking at first and, as you go deeper, you stop touching the bottom with your feet and can swim. Inside, a fairly spacious chamber opens up where light from outside enters from the other entrance open to the sea. From here you can continue towards the entrance that leads to the sea, but you must exit by breath-hold, or else continue along its wall that leads to another small gallery of dimensions very similar to the gallery through which you entered; following it you reach the aforementioned access chamber, in a short almost circular route.

Hydrology

The floor of the chamber is covered with crystal-clear water, which reaches a little above the knees.

From the main entrance and descending a drop of no more than 2 metres, you reach a chamber of good size with the floor covered with crystal-clear water, which reaches a little above the knees. On its left wall, as you enter, there are two small openings separated from one another (in fact this separation is nothing more than the wall that reaches water level and would force you to dive). Entering through the one farthest from the entrance, it allows a space of about 70 centimetres. Above the water level and with a similar width, you enter walking at first and as you go deeper, you stop touching the bottom with your feet and it allows swimming; inside, a fairly spacious chamber opens up where light from outside enters from the other entrance open to the sea.
