A 13-metre-deep pit near l'Escala, in Torroella de Montgrí, known as the Cau de les Raimeres.

Characteristics

Location

From carrer de la Punta del Milà in l'Escala, we will head to the Neus campsite, already located in the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí, following the paved track that exists on this stretch and that leads to l'Estartit. After covering 1300 metres, on the right we find an abandoned quarry; we must continue ahead about 200 metres, where on the right we find the córrec de les Raimeres. We will continue along the road about 25 metres more and go up the right-hand side, crossing a path that runs parallel to the road, where there is a marker indicating the point at which to go up through the vegetation. The cavity is 46 metres from the road.

Description

Morphology

A steep ramp leads us into a pit more than one metre in diameter and 5 metres deep. A strongly inclined ramp follows, ending at -12 metres. About 3 metres before the end and on the left, a crawlway leads to a new narrow drop of 3 metres, from where a narrow 8-metre chimney with steps can be climbed, until we reach a level of +1 metre above the entrance mouth. The total depth is 13 metres (-12/+1).

History

The Cau de les Raimeres has long been known to the people of the area. In the report of the campaign carried out by the SIE del CEA in 2007, the Cau de les Raimeres does not appear.

Later, in vol.4 of the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (2010), the Cau de les Raimeres is published with data provided from the SIE archive of the CEA, where it is located with coordinates that differ from those of the Cau de la Serp by less than 10 metres.

Curiously, in Narcís Arbusé's book el Montgrí pas a pas there is a map on which the cau de la Serp is also located in the same place.

Fortunately, our colleague Juli Serrano (SIE-CEA), one day when he was searching for the Cau de la Serp, met Narcís Arbusé; he accompanied him to the place where the cavity is found, confirming that it is another cavity located quite far from the place where it was located.
