Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed basically of calcium carbonate and the karstic rock par excellence: slightly acidic water dissolves it and carves out caves, pits and galleries. In Catalonia it is the substrate of the vast majority of cavities.
The register gathers 2711 cavities in this lithology, of which 1430 are caves and 1281 pits, with a total passage length of 143398 m. The longest cavity is the Cova de la Fou de Bor, with 4246 m, followed by the Cova Urbana de Tarragona (2441 m), the Forat de l'Or (2213 m), the Sistema de la Bargadèra (2100 m) and the Avenc de l'Esquerrà (2050 m).
As for vertical drop, the Sistema de la Bargadèra reaches -571 m, the Cigalera de l'Obaga de Baleran -320 m, the Avenc de l'Esquerrà 291 m, the Cova de la Fou de Bor 206 m and the Horat Der Unhòla 204 m.
