Caves of La Baronia de Rialb

La Baronia de Rialb, a municipality in the comarca of the Noguera, has 9 catalogued cavities: 5 pits and 4 caves. Together they total 374 metres of length and reach a maximum depth of 40 metres. The lithologies represented are limestone (6), conglomerate (2) and travertine (1).

The Pou dels Graells is the longest cavity, at 70 metres, and also the deepest, with a depth of 40 metres and an entrance of 23x4 metres; the first documented exploration was in December 1961 by the GES - CMB, which gave it a depth of 45 metres, and it was visited by C. Ribera and others in 1965. Other notable cavities are the Pou del Dring, 67 metres long and 25 metres deep in the serra d'Arçosa, explored by the ERE of the CEC in 1969; the Avenc d'en Viladrich, 62 metres long and 38 metres deep, located by the GE Pedraforca on 14 February 1971; the Avenc del Mort, 48 metres long with a vertical drop of 23 metres in the serra d'Arçosa, 30 metres from the Pou del Dring, with an entrance of 0.50x0.40 metres and three shafts of 7, 8 and 5 metres; and the Avenc del Castell de Tarabau, 39 metres long and 27 metres deep, explored for the first time by the ERE of the CEC in 1972.
