Coll de Nargó • Alt Urgell49m13m

A 49 m long cave in the Serra de Sant Joan (Coll de Nargó), with a small chamber 13 m long, 8 m wide and 6 m high, and a 15 m gallery.

Characteristics

Location

From Montanissell, follow the track that climbs up to the mas del Pitarell and continues along the N slope of the Serra de Sant Joan to reach the top of the grau del Fenollet. You must go down the ravine in the direction of the casa de Fenollet, and halfway along, on the right, there is a path, half disappeared due to the erosion of the torrent, which leads to the mouth of the cavity.

Description

Morphology

Essentially the cavity consists of a small chamber 13 metres long by 8 wide and 6 metres high, plus a 15 metre gallery that climbs in a SE direction. We enter through a rounded mouth that has been artificially retouched. A second mouth to the S, which remains hanging on the crag of the serra, and a zenithal opening, likewise hanging, also converge into the main chamber. The side gallery also ends in a 9 metre chimney that opens to the outside at another point on the crag. In total there are four mouths, of which only one is passable on foot. The surveyed route is 49 metres and the drop is +13 metres.

Other details

There are several elements that indicate that the cavity has been used to pen livestock, whether as a shelter or as a place of stay/hiding place that is difficult to locate from the outside.

History

Known and used since remote times by the people of the area. It is also well known to hikers and appears located on various maps. Despite this, it had never been mentioned in catalogues or other speleological documents.

In May 1964, members of the GES – CMB, among other cavities in the area, explored one that they called Espluga dels Moros, of which they only say: Above the casa de Fenollet. (Butll. CMB June-Sept. 1964, p. 369). We think it could be the same cavity as the Espluga de Fenollet.
