Coves del Lladre

Coves del Lladre

Espaioses coves amb molta aigua que comuniquen entre sí (Salou)

Salou • Tarragonès92m6m

Spacious caves with plenty of water that interconnect, at Cap de Salou.

Characteristics

Location

Located in the residential development that occupies the whole of Cap de Salou, one must go to find the street situated furthest E. (carrer del Reguerot del Clavegar), which ends at the stony cove of the same name. On the S side, at the foot of the cliff and very hidden by lentisks, there is one of the accesses. To find the other mouth one must climb over a ridge of rock. Very visible.

Description

Morphology

From the first mouth we find a wide descending gallery with a pool of water at the end. It continues horizontally and narrower; again more water and deeper, the gallery turns left, very regular. One must get over some blocks and another turn to the right that soon leads us to a large chamber totally flooded with depths of two to four metres. On one side a gallery of a dozen metres leads us to the bottom of the cave and on the other the S mouth can be glimpsed.

Hydrology

The water level corresponds to that of the sea, but it is not salty like the sea, it only has a slight tang.

History

Simply cited in 1923 by Bataller and Vilaseca in a geological work on Cap de Salou. Although it appears located on some maps, the first news we had was provided to us by David N. Brison, an American speleologist, resident near Paris and who for years spent the summer in Salou. In 1989 he made a sketch of the caves, although he did not come to see the connection between both cavities.

Around 2013 they were visited by Josep Guarro (SIE) and he looks at the possibility of doing a dive.

Rediscovered in January 2015 by members of the ERE – CEC who explore and survey them.
