Cova del Serret

Gran balma al barranc de la Bruixa (Montsant)

Morera de Montsant, La • Priorat17m3m

Large rock shelter in the Barranc de la Bruixa (Montsant), with a dry-stone hut and a drip spring. Surveyed in 2022 by Montse Mañosa and Jordi Navarro (CE Castellar).

Characteristics

Location

To reach it we will set out from the village of Albarca, belonging to the municipality of Cornudella de Montsant. We will take the GR171, which climbs to the Serra Major; once we have reached the Roca Corbatera, we will follow the path that runs in a SW direction parallel to the cliffs of the Serra Major until we reach the head of the Barranc de la Bruixa (monument to the Sant Crist de la Sang). We will take the path that descends along the very bed of the Barranc de la Bruixa for a stretch of about 460 m; at this point the path splits in two, and we will take the right-hand path, which runs along the barranc on the right-hand hydrographic side, and in about 760 m we will reach the cave located beside the path.

Description

Morphology

Extensive rock shelter. The outermost part of the rock shelter lies at a lower level and the ceilings of this area of the rock shelter reach 9 m in height, so that it is perfectly lit.

Hydrology

Beside the dry-stone hut there is a drip spring on the inner ceiling of the rock shelter.

Other details

At its southern end there is a dry-stone hut in a good state of conservation. Beside it there is also a small ruined enclosure.

History

Cavity known since remote times and mentioned in the maps and guides of Montsant, although not always well referenced. At the end of October 2022 Montse Mañosa and Jordi Navarro (CE Castellar) carried out the survey and cataloguing work.
