Cova de la Bruixa

Àmplia cova al barranc de la Bruixa (Montsant)

Morera de Montsant, La • Priorat23m2m

A wide cave in the Barranc de la Bruixa (Montsant), with a mouth some 40 m long, formed by a meander in the streambed of the ravine.

Characteristics

Location

It is located in the very bed of the Barranc de la Bruixa and in its final part, some 380 m before joining the barranc dels Pèlics.

To reach it we will set out from the village of Albarca, belonging to the municipality of Cornudella de Montsant. We will take the GR171 which climbs to the Serra Major; once we have reached the pla del Grau Gran, we will follow the track that descends through the Barranc dels Pèlics and will not leave it until we reach the junction with the barranc de la Bruixa. At this point we will take a path that goes up the barranc de la Bruixa and in some 270 m we will reach the cave.

Description

Morphology

Wide cave with a mouth some 40 m long, formed by a meander in the streambed of the ravine.

The extensive mouth is partly covered by three large fallen blocks that limit the access points to the cave.

Speleothems

In the inner SW zone of the cave there is a set of flowstone and column formations that enclose a small, beautifully decorated chamber.

Hydrology

The water of the ravine enters at the E end in a small waterfall and makes the meander that crosses the whole cavity, initially between large blocks and then exits outside in an area of gravel and sand at its W end.

History

Cavity known since remote times and mentioned in the maps and guides of Montsant, although not always well referenced.

At the end of October 2022 Montse Mañosa and Jordi Navarro (CE Castellar) carry out the survey and cataloguing work.
