A large cave in the barranc de la Bruixa (Montsant), with a north-facing entrance and a relatively flat floor, with a drip spring, flowstone and columns.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in the barranc de la Bruixa (Montsant). To reach it, we will set out from the village of Albarca, belonging to the municipality of Cornudella de Montsant, and take the GR171 which climbs to the Serra Major. Once we have reached Roca Corbatera, we will follow the path that runs in a SW direction parallel to the cliffs of the Serra Major until we reach the head of the Barranc de la Bruixa (monument to the Sant Crist de la Sang). At this point we will take the path that descends along the very bed of the barranc de la Bruixa for a stretch of about 460 m; at this point the path splits in two, we will take the left-hand path which runs along the left hydrographic slope of the barranc and in another 650 m we will reach the cave located beside the path.

Description

Morphology

Extensive cave with a north-facing entrance and a relatively flat floor.

Speleothems

At the opposite end of the hall, the east zone, there is a concentration of columns and flowstone that partition off a small chamber with a low ceiling and a small collapse opening.

Hydrology

The cave is characterised by having in the south zone a drip spring in the ceiling with a small watercourse towards a small pool in the west zone of the same hall.

History

Cavity known since ancient times and cited in the maps and guides of Montsant, although not always well referenced. At the end of October 2022, Montse Mañosa and Jordi Navarro (CE Castellar) carried out the survey and cataloguing work.
