Morera de Montsant, La • Priorat38m5m

Extensive cave in the barranc de la Bruixa, in Montsant, with two well-differentiated levels and remains of corral walls.

Characteristics

Location

To access it, we will leave the village of Albarca, belonging to the municipality of Cornudella de Montsant. We will take the GR171 which ascends to the Serra Major; once we have reached the Roca Corbatera, we will follow the path that runs in a SW direction parallel to the cliffs of the Serra Major until reaching the head of the barranc de la Bruixa (monument to the Sant Crist de la Sang). We will take the path that descends along the very bed of the barranc de la Bruixa for a stretch of about 460 m; at this point the path divides in two, we will take the path on the right that runs along the barranc on the right hydrographic slope and in about 480 m we will reach the cave located on the right of the path, at the base of the nearby cliff.

Description

Morphology

Extensive cave characterized by having two well-differentiated levels, the lower one at its NW end and the upper one at the SE end.

The lower level has closing walls in the manner of a corral in a good state of conservation, which suggest a livestock use of the cave; in the innermost part of this area there are other enclosures with roofs that suggest another, more personal use.

The upper level is characterized by having a gallery that goes in a southerly direction; the gallery gradually decreases in size until a low passage that allows access to a small chamber.

In the central part of the cave, there is an elevated balcony, which allows a view towards the corrals and towards the gallery of the spring.

Hydrology

In the small chamber of the upper level there is a spring that flows through the access gallery.

History

Cavity known since remote times and cited in the maps and guides of Montsant, although not always well referenced.

At the end of October 2022, Montse Mañosa and Jordi Navarro (CE Castellar) carry out the survey and cataloguing work.
