Petita cova sepulcral de 33 m. de recorregut a Sant Jaume dels Domenys

Sant Jaume dels Domenys • Baix Penedès33m2m

Small burial cave with a 33 m passage in Sant Jaume dels Domenys, with archaeological remains excavated in the 1970s and catalogued in 2016.

Characteristics

Location

It is located at km 12 of the C-431 road, between La Múnia and Sant Jaume dels Domenys. Take the turn-off towards the urban centre of La Carronya and pass through it in the direction of the Gomila farmhouse. From this farmhouse take a track to the left in a WNW direction; after 200 metres you pass a pond on the right and continue along the main track climbing the Barranc Fondo towards the Barracota, a journey of 2.2 km. A faint path to the left of the main track climbs about 30 metres above the track to the entrance of the cave.

Description

Morphology

Access to the cave is via a small descending passage. In its first metres there are blocks accumulated on both sides, and shortly afterwards it narrows into a crawlway that gives access to the main chamber of the cavity.

The main chamber, measuring 11x6x2 metres, has several compartments formed by columns and flowstone, the SW area being the most decorated.

A low passage between formations, in the N area of the main chamber, gives access to the next chamber of 4x4.5 metres, with a low ceiling and a floor on a slight upward slope.

In the S area of the main chamber there is a narrow passage of 55x25 cm that gives access to the last chamber of the cavity, with a low ceiling that forces you to crawl. The entire N wall of the chamber is covered with flowstone and at its end an impenetrable conduit communicates again with the main chamber next to the entrance crawlway.

History

The existence of the cave was reported by Josep Ma. Solé. At the beginning of the 1970s, J. Santacana carried out the excavation of the archaeological remains that appeared inside it. Visited in May 2016 by members of the Centre Excursionista de Castellar del Vallès, while carrying out the appropriate speleological cataloguing work.

Espeleoíndex note: We suspect it could be the so-called Cova de la Via, of which we have a very brief mention that places it in the nearby Plana del Gatell and which even appears geolocated in the vicinity of this one on the ICGC map. Virella (1978), in his collection of Penedès cavities, mentions it (Cova de la Via) based on old information from the AEC of Vilafranca, placing it in the neighbouring municipality of Castellví de la Marca and attributing 30 metres of passage to it. On the other hand, he does not include the Cova de la Guia.
