Cova de la Barracota

Cova de la Barracota

Petita cova de 17 m. de recorregut a Sant Jaume dels Domenys

Sant Jaume dels Domenys • Baix Penedès17m3m

Small cave with a 17 m passage in Sant Jaume dels Domenys, undocumented until May 2016.

Characteristics

Location

Near km 12 of the C-431 road between La Múnia and Sant Jaume dels Domenys, we will take the turnoff towards the urban centre of La Carronya and once we have passed it we will head towards the Gomila farmhouse.

From this farmhouse we will take a track on the left in a WNW direction, after 200 metres we will pass a pond on the right and continue along the main track going up the Barranc Fondo towards the Barracota, a journey of 2.1 km. On the right of the main track we will see a marked cliff and at its base is the cave; to reach the base one must climb about 30 metres above the track, improvising the path among the existing vegetation.

Description

Morphology

A small entrance of 0.75x1.2 metres, followed by a small corridor, leads us immediately to a chamber of 2.5x4 metres with an appreciable slope towards the N, with a low ceiling and a floor completely covered by flowstone. In the upper part of the chamber, an ascending conduit ends the possible vertical progression.

Speleothems

We will have to look for the continuation to the NW of the chamber, where a vertical fissure will allow us to progress on foot and go a few more ascending metres further in, until the narrowness and the formations close off the progression.

History

Cavity undocumented until the visit by members of the Centre Excursionista de Castellar del Vallès in May 2016 while carrying out the appropriate cataloguing work.
