Cova àfrica

Petita cavitat de 8 m de fondària a Tivenys (Baix Ebre)

Tivenys • Baix Ebre18m8m

Small cavity 8 m deep in Tivenys (Baix Ebre), discovered on 5 January 2019 by Juan Miguel Ramón, with the Sala Fantasia decorated by large stalactites.

Characteristics

Location

Leaving the village of Tivenys in the direction of Benifallet, after 2.5 km we will take a track on the right heading NE signposted as Partida de Foix. We will continue along the concreted path until we reach the lower part of Santos (Creu de Santos); from here the path becomes a dirt track in good condition, we will continue along it until we reach a closed bend to the right where there is space to leave the cars, we park and continue on foot. We will take a little-marked waymarked path that runs parallel to the Barranc de Raudó and in less than 15 minutes descends to the bottom of the ravine, where the Avenc Boca de Foix is found.

Going back up the ravine along the right bank and heading N, about 50 m from the pit, we will cross the ravine, climb up a rocky area between the two gullies heading NE for about 250 m and at the upper part of the cliff we will find Cova Mansebo. 50 m in a NE direction, on the right-hand part of the cliff, between three blocks is the entrance to Cova Àfrica.

Description

Morphology

Between three blocks, the mouth of the cavity opens, cleared for access. Through a small crawlway and halfway along it, we find the continuation on the left-hand side through a selective hole and crouching with sand on the floor, which leads us to a hanging window. We climb down the 3.5 m drop and reach the Sala Fantasia, the room with the greatest volume in the cavity. From this room a crawlway emerges that ends choked by blocks.

Speleothems

The Sala Fantasia is decorated by large stalactites that reach about 30 cm from the floor.

Progression

Through a small crawlway and halfway along it, we find the continuation on the left-hand side through a selective hole and crouching with sand on the floor, which leads us to a hanging window. We climb down the 3.5 m drop and reach the Sala Fantasia.

History

Discovered by Juan Miguel Ramón on 5 January 2019, who detected an air current between some blocks and cleared the mouth to be able to access it. The following weekend (13/01/19) Juan Miguel, Carlos Cantero, Tomas Brull, Adrià Rebull, Esther Quirós, Santi Higins and Tonet Piñol began the explorations. Once all the unknowns had been checked, the exploration was concluded.

Visited on 25-5-2019 by Vicent Barraquet, Sarai Ramirez and other companions who carried out the survey and cataloguing work.
