Characteristics

Location

On the N slope of the Serra de Cardó. The most advisable access, although long, starts from the T-301 road which, shortly after leaving Benifallet towards Tivenys, at km 23 has a track that through the Vallenponç area leads to the coll de Motxo and continues along the camí de Costumà. The cavity is located at the foot of a cliff situated at the head of the barranc de Costumà.

Description

Morphology

Large rock shelter about 40 metres wide at the mouth and about 8-10 metres high. Along its width a dry-stone wall runs.

The cavity, from the outer lip, goes in about 18 metres in length and the final section rises by a kind of natural steps that lead to the highest point where the cavity closes.

History

Known since ancient times, but it is not until the autumn of 1921 that it is discovered by Maties Pallarès in the course of a survey of the barrancs of the area. Studies by Bosch Gimpera and Colomines begin immediately afterwards, describing two paintings of highly stylised human figures which they classify as rock art.

Much later studies (Alonso; Grimal, 1987) conclude that these drawings cannot be considered as belonging to rock art, but rather of a later chronology and difficult to classify. In fact, they no longer even appear in the archaeological inventory of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
