Balma de la Volta

Balma a Castellet i la Gornal.

Castellet i la Gornal • Alt Penedès7m0

A rock shelter in Castellet i la Gornal, above the BV-2116 road, near the Font d'Horta.

Characteristics

Location

Above Km. 5 of the BV-2116 road that links the urban centres of Castellet i la Gornal and Clariana, we will take the descending track towards the Font d'Horta and Cal Bladet for about 180m, until reaching the Font d'Horta bridge where we will leave the vehicle and continue on foot along the path that starts on the other side of the bridge and heads towards the Font d'Horta.

We will go up the Torrent de Font d'Horta for about 625m along the marked path, about 40m before the Font d'Horta which remains on the right of the path and about 100m before the Balma de la Font d'Horta.

One must climb up to the left of the path about 20m of elevation gain to the entrance of the cavity, located at the base of a small step, just beside some large collapse blocks.

Description

Morphology

The rock shelter is characterised by a low-ceilinged chamber, about 0.6m in average height, and an arch at its W end that supports the structure and at the same time divides the access into two elongated openings.

Progression

At the E end of the chamber, a narrow joint allows one to go in a few metres further until the narrownesses prevent any possible progression.

History

In June 2018 Jordi Navarro and Montse Mañosa (Centre Excursionista Castellar) located and surveyed it for its cataloguing.
