Interessant avenc de 75 metres de fondària proper al Mas de la Pleta, Sitges.

Sitges • Garraf104m75m

A 75-metre-deep pit near Mas de la Pleta, Sitges. First explored by the GES of the CMB in September 1956, assigning it -11 metres. In 2009 the Serrano brothers (the Daltons) of the SES of the GER cleared the bottom and found new shafts.

Characteristics

Location

About 400 metres WSW of la Pleta. From the back of the car park of the Park Information Centre, we follow a path that follows a nature trail of the Park which jumps over the old field margins and heads S towards the old pond of la Pleta. As we approach the torrent we will turn right onto a small path that goes into the hollow of the torrent; the torrent soon takes on a steep slope where we will find the entrance of the avenc de la Pleta.

Description

Morphology

A wide entrance leads down to a 4.6-metre shaft, followed by a steep ramp and then a new shaft with small ledges down to -11 metres; at this point a -25-metre shaft opens up. Just past the entrance of the shaft, it opens out, acquiring quite spectacular dimensions; at the same spot a short gallery opens onto the parallel shaft, and on its ceiling a hanging gallery can be seen. Once at the base of the 25-metre shaft, a new 30-metre shaft about 5 metres in diameter opens up, where the first section is steeply sloping with some small ledges, becoming completely vertical for the last 17 metres; the base, about 6.35x3.5 metres, has a gentle slope to the other end, where a narrow vertical passage 5 metres deep opens up, followed by another of 2.39, this last section being extremely narrow.

Progression

Equipment needed: the cave is fully equipped with fixed bolts and hangers, except for the external rigging. For the exploration a 60-metre rope can be used down to the first rebelay past the deviation, and 40 metres for the rest of the cave, 8 carabiners and 2 more with hangers for the entrance.

Other details

In this last section of vertical squeeze we noticed symptoms of hypoxia (January 2011).

History

The first exploration was carried out by the GES of the CMB in September 1956, assigning it a depth of -11 metres.

Around 2009 the Serrano brothers (known as the Daltons), belonging to the SES club of the GER (Sant Pere de Ribes), carried out a clearance at the bottom of the cave resulting in the discovery of a series of new shafts of spectacular dimensions; at the end of these they cleared a vertical squeeze using micros.
