Characteristics

Location

About 400 metres WSW of the Pleta. From the back of the car park of the Park Information Centre, we will follow a path that jumps over the old field margins and that in a S direction heads towards the old Pleta pond. As we approach the torrent we will turn right onto a small path that goes in looking for the hollow of the torrent; the torrent soon takes on a steep slope where we will find the mouth of the avenc de la Pleta, and a little further down in the middle of the torrent bed the mouth of the avenc Morgan i Comas opens. From here we will have to follow the hydrographic left passing over some blocks where we will find the mouth of the avenc de les Serps about 10 metres further on.

Description

Morphology

Mouth of 2 x 1 metres that gives rise to a short ramp section leading to a single circular pit about 5 metres in diameter that descends directly to the bottom of the cavity. After a hard clearance (2018) at the N end of the base of the pit, a conduit was opened that connects with a wide chamber where the ceiling rises about 18 m. Its base is an ascending ramp covered in mud and which at its highest part connects with a side gallery with a ceiling about 7 m high and continues to a new zone where the height is about 10 m. Here the exploration ends for the moment.

Progression

After opening a horizontal conduit of 2 metres and 2 more vertical metres, the “Via GERS” was reached. They climbed the last two pits with the failed hope of finding a continuation. In June 2018 a joint trip was made with members of the Espeleodijous, who installed a rope on the ascending ramp. However, a simultaneous exploration was made at the Avenc Morgan i Comas (pit), managing to hear the shouts, in a very muffled way, between the explorers of the two cavities and without being able to determine the point where the two can connect.

Other details

It seems that at some point, until now unknown, it could have a connection with the nearby Avenc Morgan i Comas (pit), but the high level of hypoxia makes exploration work very difficult and a possible clearance even more so.

History

Discovered and explored by members of GES-CMB in September 1956, becoming a classic cavity of the massif.

On a visit to the avenc, Emili Bifet (GERS) sensed a possible continuation through a side of the base of the beautiful entrance pit. He returned alone and began removing stones, managing to take a photo of the continuation, putting his arm with the mobile phone through the little hole he had opened. Here the clearance work began by members of the GERS, which can be summarised in a campaign that lasted from 18 May 2018 to 1 June 2019. A total of 9 trips were made, 6 of them dedicated to clearing the narrow passage and the other days to surveying the avenc de les Serps, the avenc Morgan i Comas and the Avenc de la Pleta.

Work was done at the crawlway cutting the stone over 7 days, with injected air, due to the hardship of working in hypoxia and high CO2 (hypercapnia).
