A 24 m deep pit in Castellar del Vallès, on the northern slope of the Carena de l'Illa, above the torrent de Matalonga.

Location

On the northern slope of the Carena de l'Illa, above the slope of the torrent de Matalonga.

Access can be gained from the house of l'Illa (les Arenes), from where a path leaves that runs along the whole of the carena and, on reaching a col (elevation 526 m), one must descend about 40 metres in a NNW direction.

One can also go by the track that leads to the Muronell sector and, when about to enter the Sot del Muronell, a path on the right climbs up towards the Carena de l'Illa.

Description

Morphology

An opening of 5 x 2 metres gives access to a shaft that develops, in its first eight metres, along a N45E joint, passing for the rest of the cavity onto another N25E joint.

Speleothems

The conglomerate is slightly decalcified and free of re-constructive processes in the first stretch, down to elevations -8 and -12 (SW and NNE walls), from which notable lithogenic flows appear.

History

Faura in his Recull (1909) already mentions the cavity, attributing to it a depth of 22 metres, but we do not know who carried out the first exploration or when.
