Description
Morphology
The wide entrance, initially a slope, becomes a vertical drop of a few metres, placing us at the base at -10.40 metres. Other smaller access entrances connect with a reduced space and allow one to reach the vertical step of the large entrance. The direction of the main joint is 30NE-SW, and E-W the secondary one. Towards the W one descends on a gentle gradient to a narrow passage between blocks that allows one to reach, after a short slope, -13 metres, to the step located at -15 metres and the bottom located at -27 metres. At this point the passage gradually narrows until it becomes impassable.
History
The first partial exploration of which we have record was carried out by members of the SIRE of the UEC on 8 December 1976; later they returned accompanied by members of the GGG (Grup Geogràfic de Gràcia, predecessor of the current ECG), who completed the exploration on 9 January 1977.
At first it was wrongly named “Avenc de Can Roca Reiga no. 1”; this name was corrected in later catalogues to the correct name of “Can Roca Roja”.
This cavity belongs to the municipality of Sant Feliu de Pallerols, and therefore to the comarca of Garrotxa. At the time it was wrongly placed in the municipality of Rupit i Pruit and therefore in the comarca of Osona; we suppose that this error came about because the access is from the Rupit road and because the house of Can Roca Roja is also located in that municipality, but the cavity is not.
