Characteristics

Location

Driving along the C-153 road from Rupit to the coll de Condreu, shortly after passing kilometre 35 and at the end of the straight where a large “estelada” is painted, we will turn left to take a track that first climbs parallel to the riera de Papalló, and then continues climbing parallel to the torrent de Coma-Serra in a second section; we will always follow the main track until we come out onto a flat area with cultivated fields, we will follow it until we reach a crossroads crossed by a power line, we will continue straight on and in less than 300 metres we will reach a cultivated field in the very middle of which stands the mas of Can Roca Roja.

Instead of heading towards the house, we will skirt the field on the left, where level with the house we will find an old forest track; we will follow it for about 15 metres where we will find a crossroads, we will take the right-hand one to the end of the track, which ends a few metres before reaching a small flat area with some hunting reserve signs. If we look at the trees at this point, we will see that some are marked with red paint; we will follow these marks on the trees along a path through the middle of the forest and soon we will find some small cairns beside the path that place us at the lower entrance of the avenc de Can Roca Roja nº2.

From here we will continue a few metres further on and turn right, following a kind of flat terrace which we will cross for 34 metres, until we find a fissure that blocks our way; at the upper part of this fissure is the entrance of the cavity.

Description

Morphology

A wide open joint forms the first section of the cavity, down which one descends by a ramp occupied by blocks that place us at a depth of -6 metres. From here one continues among blocks that give access to a vertical drop of 7 metres (level -14 metres); at this point a ramp with a 35º incline begins that will take us to the bottom of the cavity at –22 metres.

History

The first exploration of which we have a record is the one carried out on 9 June 1976 by members of the GGG (Grup Geogràfic de Gràcia, predecessor of the current ECG), who explored and surveyed the cavity.

At first it was erroneously called “Avenc de Can Roca Reiga no. 4”; this name was corrected in later catalogues to the correct name of “Can Roca Roja”.

This cavity belongs to the municipality of Sant Feliu de Pallerols, and therefore to the comarca of the Garrotxa. At the time it was erroneously placed in the municipality of Rupit i Pruit and therefore in the comarca of the Osona; we suppose that this error came about because the access is from the Rupit road and because the house of Can Roca Roja is also located in that municipality, but the cavity is not.
