Caves of Falset

In the municipality of Falset, in the comarca of Priorat, 5 cavities are known: 4 caves and 1 pit. Together they total a length of 56 m and reach a maximum depth of 5 m. As for the lithology, 3 cavities develop in sandstones and 2 in limestones.

The cavity with the greatest length is the Avenc de les Torres, with 16 m, a small fissure 4 m deep with large wedged blocks. It is followed by the Cova de Sant Cristòfol and the Cova de Sant Gregori, both 12 m in length; the Cova de Sant Gregori, located to the SE of Falset, is excavated in the silicic sandstones of the Buntsandstein and is the deepest in the municipality, at 5 m. The set is completed by the Balma Ermita de Sant Gregori, a troglodytic hermitage sheltered in a large rock shelter 44 m long, 9.5 m deep and 10 m high, and the Cova dels Pastors, a broad rock shelter south of the hermitage of Sant Gregori, excavated in red sandstones, with a length of 12 m, a depth of 5.5 m and a height of 4 m.
